Addressing Student Concerns: Egerton University's Commitment to Improvement

In a recent gathering of minds at the ARC Hotel, Egerton University, a focused discussion took place, tackling crucial issues plaguing the student experience. Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage emphasized the importance of student engagement in their academic journey.

Among the pressing matters discussed were examination-related challenges, missing marks, and the indispensable role of active participation in the learning process.

"The student portal is a fundamental tool for all students, facilitating their registration for examinations," Vice Chancellor Kibwage underscored.

He urged all students to recognize the portal's significance and embrace its functionalities as a means to streamline the examination process. This call was echoed by the Vice Chancellor's clear directive on academic progression, emphasizing that students must achieve success in their examinations before advancing to the next academic year.

Amid the captivating ambiance of the Egerton University Students Association Training session, Vice Chancellor Kibwage shed light on the university's management framework. Addressing a captivated audience of student leaders, he meticulously delineated the University's structure, an elucidation crucial for a harmonious academic environment.

 "As the Vice Chancellor of Egerton University, I am resolute in my commitment to addressing student concerns," Vice Chancellor Kibwage affirmed. He underscored his role as a guardian of student welfare, ready and available to swiftly resolve any legitimate grievances that may arise.

Noteworthy figures from Egerton University's administration graced the occasion, enriching the discourse with their insights. In attendance were the esteemed Dean of Students, Dr. Japhet Muthamia, and Assistant Deans of Students, Dr. Omwoyo Justin and Town Campus's Mr. Talia Wekesa. Their presence attested to the University's dedication to fostering open dialogue and collaboration between its leadership and the student body.

Student Voices Rise: A Spectrum of Concerns

dean 4As the floor opened for questions, the diversity of student concerns became apparent. A notable inquiry came from Davies Ayieko, a Veterinary Medicine student, who beseeched the Vice Chancellor's assistance in establishing a dedicated resource center for their field. Addressing the University's aesthetic and infrastructural aspects, Mr. Osano of the Faculty of Education put forth proposals for enhanced cleanliness through the placement of additional dust bins and the improvement of pavements and roads.

The crucial domain of healthcare emerged as a focal point, with students raising concerns over the availability of medications in the medical department and the efficacy of emergency response services. Vice Chancellor Kibwage assured the students that adequate steps were being taken to bolster medical supplies and improve ambulance services, thus ensuring the wellbeing of the student population.

Strengthening Academic Resources and Campus Living

The importance of a conducive research environment was acknowledged, with students from the Faculty of Science advocating for equitable access to internet services throughout the campus. They posited that uniform internet availability would foster an environment conducive to research and innovation, positioning the university at the forefront of academic advancement.

Ruwenzori Hostel's upkeep emerged as a topic of concern, with students expressing dissatisfaction over its maintenance. Addressing this, Vice Chancellor Kibwage revealed ongoing renovation efforts in two of the Ruwenzori blocks. Moreover, he underlined the University's commitment to providing a healthy living environment, eschewing overcrowding in hostel rooms and ensuring compliance with original design specifications.

Transitioning to the Town Campus, students highlighted the issue of space congestion affecting their academic experience. The Vice Chancellor assured students that measures would be taken to alleviate the situation, working in tandem with the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences to address specific concerns within the medical studies department. Furthermore, he urged students to collaborate in crafting effective timetables to optimize lecture hall usage.

Commitment to Holistic Student Welfare

dean 7Turning to sports and extracurricular activities, Vice Chancellor Kibwage pledged the University's dedication to providing the necessary sports gear, promoting physical well-being among the student body.

The perennial issue of missing marks on the student portal elicited Vice Chancellor Kibwage's attentive response. He assured students that the matter would be thoroughly examined and resolved, while emphasizing the security and protection of student data.

Phillip Nyayo, Director of Academic Affairs, brought forth a visionary proposal for enhanced technological infrastructure. He advocated for an expedited Wi-Fi implementation and proposed the establishment of a Pharmacy curriculum, illustrating the University's commitment to academic excellence and expansion.

Students' Voices Amplified: Acknowledgment and Aspirations

Cynthia Wanini, the Students Chairperson, expressed gratitude for Vice Chancellor Kibwage's transparent and earnest interaction with student concerns. She lauded the fruitful discussions and expressed confidence in the administration's ability to address the challenges raised.

Wanini also highlighted the forthcoming transformation of Tatton into a functional workspace, highlighting the potential for increased student revenue. Furthermore, she encouraged the University's involvement in nurturing student-led initiatives, underscoring the importance of responsible utilization of allocated facilities.

Vice Chancellor Kibwage concluded the session by charging student leaders with the responsibility of effective governance over student facilities. He emphasized that the management of these resources should remain within the purview of students, reinforcing a sense of ownership and promoting responsible utilization.

A Pledge to Progress

In the spirited atmosphere of Egerton University's Students Association Training session, the collective efforts of students and administration illuminated a path forward. As the University prepares for the influx of first-year students in September 2023, Vice Chancellor Kibwage's steadfast commitment to enhancing the student experience echoes throughout the institution. With renewed dedication to communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement, Egerton University stands poised to foster an enriching and holistic academic environment for all its students.
