Dr. Elizabeth Wangui Muoria is a lecturer at Egerton University, Kenya. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in Environmental Science (Water and Sanitation) from Egerton University, a Master of Environmental Science degree from the same university and a Bachelor of Education Science Degree of Kenyatta University. Prior to her appointment in Egerton University, Elizabeth was a high school teacher and has a wide experience in teaching Biology and Mathematics. She has been involved in the organisation and preparation of students in many school activities such as science congress. Elizabeth has also taught science subjects in the Republic of Seychelles as an ex-pat teacher for two years. She has always enjoyed teaching and mentoring high school students. Elizabeth has always been interested in environmental conservation work and has participated in various initiatives with the Kenya Wildlife Service and other school based organizations such as Wildlife Clubs of Kenya. Her love for the environment motivated her to pursue a Master Degree in Environmental Science at Egerton University Njoro and later pursued a doctorate in the same field in the same University to better understand environmental issues of concern locally, nationally and internationally and enable her participate in finding solutions to these problems. Her major area is Environmental Health water and sanitation and she has published papers on electronic waste management and effect of population on access to water and sanitation which is of major concern globally. She is also interested in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and hopes to change the way communities view and relate to the environment through outreach programs and actively participating in programmes geared towards reorientation of the Kenya education curriculum towards ESD. Elizabeth is passionate about seeing and hearing about the success of girls and women in STEM and STEM careers and this is what motivated her to become a member of OWSD and later together with other like-minded people initiated the process of starting an OWSD-Kenya with the prime aim of mentoring girls and encouraging them to take up science subjects that with enable them pursue STEM careers. To this end Elizabeth is actively involved in the mentorship programs organised by OWSD-Kenya in primary and secondary schools and hopes to take this program to higher tertiary level so that they can remain in STEM careers.
