SUMMARY

Professor Dorcas K. Isutsa is a Professor of Horticulture and Plant Biotechnology, specializing in Pomology (Fruit Science) value chains, and is based in the Department of Crops, Horticulture and Soils at Egerton University-Kenya. Previously, Professor Isutsa was the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Chuka University from 8^th/2/2022 to 9^th/6/2023. From 11^th/9/2013 to 10^th/9/2023, Professor Isutsa was Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Academic, Research and Student Affairs of Chuka University that entailed overseeing, managing, coordinating, supervising and implementing teaching, academic, research, extension and student affairs. From 8^th Jan-10^th /9/2013, Professor Isutsa acted as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Academic Affairs of Chuka University. From March 2011 to Jan. 2013, Professor Isutsa was the Deputy Principal in-charge of Academic Affairs of Chuka University College. From 2012 to 2023, Professor Isutsa was the ISO 9001 QMS Management Representative of Chuka University.

Professor Isutsa holds a Ph.D. in Horticulture (Pomology/Fruit Science) from Cornell University, USA (1998), a Master of Science in Horticulture (Pomology/Fruit Science) from Cornell University, USA (1994), and B.Sc. in Horticulture from Egerton University (1990). Professor Isutsa holds two post-doctoral certificates in Plant Biotechnology, Biosafety, Breeding and Seed Systems from Wageningen International Agricultural Centre, Netherlands (2004), and in Advanced Plant Biotechnology Techniques from the University of Reading, UK (2005).

Prior to joining the faculty of Egerton University, Professor Isutsa pursued first degree training at Egerton University from 1987 to 1990 and successfully completed as a pioneer graduate of Horticulture. After becoming an alumnus of Egerton University, Professor Isutsa joined the Department of Horticulture at Egerton University in 1990 as a teaching assistant. Since joining Egerton University, Professor Isutsa pursed requisite advanced studies and was promoted through the ranks to become an assistant lecturer in 1993; lecturer in 1997; senior lecturer in 1999; associate professor in 2003; and professor in 2013.

Subsequently, Professor Isutsa was appointed the Chairperson of the Department of Horticulture at Egerton University from October 2001 to October 2005. The period involved serving as a Senate member and occasionally acting as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture. While serving as the Chairperson of the Department of Horticulture, over KES 150 million were mobilized to set up a modern biotechnology laboratory and greenhouse technology facilities at Egerton University for teaching, research and extension. The funds were availed through partnership with the Chinese, United Kingdom and USA Governments.

Upon returning from pursing Ph.D. studies in 1998 up to 2011, Professor Isutsa was subsequently appointed to the following additional administrative posts in Egerton University: October 2001-March 2011, member of the Egerton University and Tea Research Foundation of Kenya joint-steering committee; Dec. 2002-Mar. 2011, editor and reviewer of the Egerton University Journal, producing 5 volumes; August 1998-October 2001, coordinator, advisor and reviewer of the Egerton University Journal; August 1998-October 2001, representative to the Faculty of Agriculture Research and Publications Committee; 2000-March 2011, member of the Graduation Committee of Egerton University; October 2001-March 2011, member of the Food Production Committee for University students and the Agricultural Resources Centre; 2005-2011, chairperson of Biotechnology Research Committee of Egerton University; 2007-March 2011, member of the Egerton University Research Week and International Conference Committee for organising and producing programmes, books of abstracts and proceedings. Thereafter, Professor Isutsa was competitively and meritoriously appointed by the Government of Kenya to go and serve in Chuka University from the year 2011 to the year 2023 (two terms).

Professor Isutsa has spent the past 33 years participating in academic, research, extension and consultancy activities, emphasizing: development of efficient horticultural plant production, value addition, orchard and nursery management technologies. This general expertise was augmented by applying plant biotechnology techniques to improve plant productivity, food and nutrition security among farmers and in the country. Professor Isutsa is devoted to championing and promoting sustainable value chains, propagation, distribution, production, utilization and commercialization of industrial, subsistence, exotic, indigenous, high value, and underutilized horticultural crops, be they fruits, vegetables, flowers, beverages, herbs and nuts, using conventional and modern biotechnology techniques. These goals are realized through consultancy, awareness creation, technology transfer, participatory adoption, implementation and commercialization of research and innovation findings.

The research and consultancy work undertaken from 1998 to 2023 entailed assuming the role of principal investigator (PI) or co-PI of over 35 projects, thereby realising a total of over KES 455.5 million. The donors for the research, consultancy and partnership projects included: the European Union, NRF-Kenya, KAPAP-World Bank, NaCoSTI-Kenya, British Council, Rockefeller Foundation, Arthur Boller Research Grant, DAAD, Cornell University-USA, Chinese Government, Israel Government, Malaysia Government, Netherlands Government, Germany Government, and Government of Kenya. During this period, facilitation, coordination or initiation for signing of over 38 Memoranda of Understanding with national and international institutions was realised.

Regarding scholarly work, Professor Isutsa has published over 80 articles in internationally refereed journals, 4 books, 8 technical bulletins, 24 research conference proceedings, 52 research conference abstracts, won 11 professional awards, 8 international recognitions, attended and presented papers at 57 national and international symposia/conferences, been a member of 18 national and international professional associations, societies and boards, thereby serving as a chair, secretary, member, patron, reviewer or representative. Presently, Professor Isutsa has successfully supervised 5 Ph.D. degree graduates, 10 Master’s degree graduates, 4 ongoing Master’s degree students, and hence contributed to mentoring and producing highly trained human resources in Kenya and beyond. Research projects for 5 Ph.D. and 3 Master’s degree students were financed by the Rockefeller and KAPAP research grants won by Prof. Isutsa as the Principal Investigator. Professor Isutsa has externally examined/reviewed 8 Master’s degree and 2 Ph.D degree theses for UoN, JKUAT, Maseno and Egerton Universities.

Beyond scholarly engagement, Professor Isutsa has volunteered as a member/chairperson/patron/secretary of many professional associations, alma maters, fellowships, and clubs.
