Watailuk Mixed Day and Boarding School in Kiminini Constituency, Trans-Nzoia County, is considering a strategic transition into a university, marking a significant milestone in the region’s pursuit of expanded access to higher education. The proposal was deliberated during a high-level consultative meeting that brought together national government officials led by area Assistant County Commissioner, education stakeholders, community members, and a senior delegation from Egerton University.

The institution, which occupies approximately 20 acres of land, hosted the Egerton University delegation led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage, accompanied by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics, Research and Extension) Prof. Bernard Aduda and Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Planning) Prof. Richard Mulwa.

The meeting was also attended by national government officials led by the Assistant County Commissioner, the area Member of County Assembly, members of the School Management Board, parents, and local leaders.Speaking during the forum, Prof. Kibwage observed that the available land provides a strong foundation for the proposed development, but emphasized the need to acquire additional acreage to meet the requirements of a fully-fledged university.He further urged the local community to prepare to support a university ecosystem by investing in complementary services such as accommodation, transport, hospitality, and other social amenities that would sustain and grow the institution.

The Vice Chancellor noted that the presence of Egerton University’s top leadership at the grassroots engagement was deliberate and symbolic of the institution’s commitment to the initiative. He stated that it is rare for a Vice Chancellor and two Deputy Vice Chancellors to attend such meetings, underscoring Egerton University’s serious interest in assessing the proposed site and supporting the process.

Prof. Kibwage announced that Egerton University would constitute a technical committee to guide the transition, a move expected to facilitate a formal government commitment towards the establishment of a university in the area.He further revealed that Kiminini Member of Parliament, Hon.Kakai Bisau has already drafted a letter to the Commission for University Education (CUE) seeking approval for the establishment of a university in Trans-Nzoia County.

Additionally, Hon. Kakai has formally requested Egerton University to provide technical, academic, and mentorship support. In response, Egerton University has expressed its readiness to support the establishment of an agriculture-based institution, aligning with the county’s agricultural potential and Egerton’s core mandate.
