On July 22, 2025, a successful Farmers’ Field Day was held at Kapnyeberai, Kilibwoni in Nandi County under the Kenya Sustainable Potato Initiative (KSPI), funded by AGRA. The event was organized by the National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) in collaboration with Egerton University, the County Government of Nandi, and several partners including Twiga Chemicals, Fanisi, Syngenta, Bayer, Nelion Trading Ltd, Freshcrop, FIPs Africa, CGA, Biological Carbon, Sunculture, University of Eldoret, and Viazi King.
The Field Day aimed to promote sustainable potato farming practices, share knowledge, and foster resilience among local farmers. The event brought together potato farmers eager to learn modern farming technologies and practices aimed at increasing productivity and sustainability. Key areas of training included Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), use of certified seed potatoes and apical cuttings, post-harvest management, contract farming, digital marketing via the Viazi Soko platform, and integrated pest and disease control. Professor Kibe ( KSPI-lead) , representing Egerton University, emphasized the importance of research-driven agriculture in enhancing productivity of potato farming in Nandi and other Counties the project is being implemented.
This includes commitment in the significant steps taken toward sustainable and resilient Potato farming with Egerton KPSI.
Farmers appreciated the work done by Egerton University through KPSI in teaching them innovations modern farming methods in soil health such as organic composts, conditioners, and fertilizers, as well as solar-powered irrigation systems.
The field day demonstrated the value of collaboration in equipping farmers with practical tools to improve livelihoods and enhance food security.
In addion, farmers learnt more about disease-resistant potato varieties, organic fertilizers, and efficient irrigation systems. The event also featured success stories from local farmers who have adopted sustainable practices, showcasing improved yields and income learnt through KPSI.
