The National Defence University of Kenya (NDU-K) management based at the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet Nakuru, held a meeting with Egerton University Management Board (UMB) on Monday, 13 September 2021. The meeting held at Main Campus in Njoro looked at the rich history of partnership between Egerton University and the Kenya Defence Forces. Egerton University was the first university in Kenya to launch diploma and degree programmes in Military Sciences in 2011. These programmes were offered at Kenya Military Academy in Lanet, which later spread to all the military barracks like Embakasi, Langata and others. To date, Egerton University offers these courses at the military barracks.
“We are here to discuss ways we can use Egerton University as a mentor and as an entity to support us in linkages, mentor-ship and capacity building. We consider your institution as one of our leading partners, and this collaboration will create synergy for the national good,” said Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi, the NDU-K Vice-Chancellor, during the discussions
“We will work closely with key stakeholders in the education ecosystem, including Egerton University, to ensure high academic standards,” he added.
The possible areas of collaboration between Egerton University and NDU-K are post-charter collaboration, joint research, mentorship in teaching and linkages, capacity building, publications, peer reviews and sharing best practices in terms of quality control and examination management system.

The acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Kibwage, welcomed the partnership, adding that Egerton University will be part and parcel of the success of NDU-K.
“As a leading University, we have the capacity to provide training in areas such as writing publications, proposals and extension materials. In addition, we have qualified academic staff that will be part of capacity building at your institution, said the acting Vice-Chancellor.
Present during the meeting were members of Egerton University’s Management Board comprising of acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Professor Micah Chepchieng, acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Extension) Professor Bockline Bebe, acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration Planning and Development) Professor Richard Mulwa, Principal Nakuru Town Campus College Professor Joshua Ogendo, Registrar (Academic Affairs) Professor Mwanarusi Saidi, acting Registrar (Human Capital & Administration) Ms Stella Kereto, acting Director (Research and Extension) Professor Nancy Mungai, University Librarian Ms Janegrace Kinyanjui, Finance Officer Mr Moses Ouma.
Also present were the Director of School of Distance Learning Professor Fred Keraro and the former Director, Professor Ezra Maritim.
From the NDU-K were the Vice-Chancellor Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance) Major General P. Amogola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Applied Research and Military Strategic Studies) Major General Rashid Elmi, Director (Centre for Security and Strategic Studies) Major General George Owinow, Director (Academic Affairs) Brigadier E. Kinuthia, Director (Applied Research and Military Strategic Studies) Brigadier J. Mwinyikai, Director (Examination) Brigadier Elizabeth Omollo, and Head of Teaching and Curriculum Colonel (Dr) Charles Imbiakha.
NDU-K received its Charter on May 2021 from the President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, and will offer courses to students from Kenya and other parts of the world.
