A day of major significance unfolded at Egerton University as a remarkable coincidence brought together top government, diplomatic, and academic leaders, resulting in a joint pledge to deepen research, student exchange, and international collaboration.
The day saw Prof. Abdulrazak M. Shaukat, the Principal Secretary for Research for Higher Education (Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary), arrived on a scheduled mission to assess the University’s Research Laboratories and innovative products. Unbeknownst to him, the campus was simultaneously hosting H.E. Guo Haiyan, the Ambassador of China to Kenya, who was on hand to award the annual prestigious Ambassadors Scholarship to deserving Egerton students.
A Powerful Coincidence and Tripartite Tour.
The fortuitous meeting was further elevated by the presence of a key institutional collaborator, Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) of China, represented by its Vice President, Prof. Zhu Yan.
The three high-profile guests—Prof. Shaukat, H.E. Ambassador Haiyan, and Prof. Zhu Yan—were hosted by the elated Egerton University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, flanked by the University Management Board.
The dignitaries embarked on a comprehensive tour of various university sections, paying keen attention to the research facilities and collaborative projects, particularly those related to the longstanding partnership with NAU, which centers on agricultural innovation.
Planting the Seeds of Friendship and Future Growth
A symbolic highlight of the event was the planting of a Tree of Friendship , representing the growing partnership and mutual commitment to a sustainable future between Kenya and China.
Following the campus tour, the leaders held candid discussions on critical issues aimed at promoting academic excellence.

Promoting Student Education: Enhancing the quality of learning and providing more opportunities for students.
Deepening Research and Innovation: Exploring avenues for joint research ventures and commercializing university products.
Exchange Programs: Expanding student and staff exchange programs between Egerton University and Nanjing Agricultural University.
Accessing Government Support: Strategizing on how Egerton University can effectively access the necessary research and infrastructure support from the Government of Kenya as well as assistance and funding offered by the Chinese government to both Egerton and NAU.
Alumni Relations: On the sidelines of the Nanjing Vice President visit, the alumni of Nanjing University met to unveil their Kenyan Chapter. Over 20 members who have graduated Masters, Doctor of Philosophy and other exchange programs met to celebrate the Nanjing Agricultural University Alumni , Egerton University Chapter. Among notable Alumni are Prof. Charles Inyangwa Muleke (Chair), Dr Miriam Charimbu (Secretary), Dr Grace Kibue (UASU Egerton Chapter Secretary), Dr Peter Mecha, Prof Arnold Opiyo, Prof. Joshua Ogweno, Dr Benard Karanja among others.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage expressed his profound excitement at hosting such a distinguished trio of guests.
