Egerton University has officially launched its 4th Strategic Plan (2023–2027), setting a new trajectory to guide the institution over the next five years.
The event was led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage at the Njoro Main Campus and attended by members of the University Council, University Management Board, Senate, and staff, underscoring a united front in steering the University into the future.
Prof. Kibwage said the new Strategic Plan is designed to respond to emerging realities and challenges in the higher education sector.
“This plan aligns our strategies to the new realities brought by the post-COVID-19 pandemic, the changing economic and environmental landscape, and the vision of the Kenya Kwanza Government as outlined in the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also noted that the plan takes cognizance of the new funding model for universities, which has introduced new budgetary realities requiring prudent financial planning and innovation.
He reaffirmed the University Management’s commitment to provide leadership in implementing the Plan despite the unfolding challenges, emphasizing that its success depends on the collective effort of all stakeholders.
The University Council, through its Chairperson, assured students, staff, and other stakeholders of its commitment to mobilize the necessary resources to achieve the goals and objectives outlined in the Plan.
The Council also commended the Ministry of Education, the State Department for Higher Education and Research, the National Treasury and Economic Planning, local and international collaborators, as well as Egerton University staff and students for their contributions.
Special recognition was given to the Strategic Planning Committee chaired by Prof. Richard M.S. Mulwa and comprising Prof. Gilbert O. Obwoyere, Prof. Daniel O. Auka, Prof. George O. Owuor, Prof. Nancy W. Mungai, Prof. Wilkister N. Moturi, Dr. Phoebe F. Ongalo, Mr. Charles Wanjohi, Mr. Vincent Kipng’etich, and Mr. Hezron Chwero for their dedication in preparing the Plan.
The Strategic Plan is anchored on five core pillars: providing quality higher education and training, enhancing research and outreach, strengthening governance and resource mobilization, expanding ICT capacity, and improving infrastructure and the campus environment.
Its implementation will be tracked through quarterly reviews, annual assessments, and a mid-term evaluation.
Prof. Kibwage called on staff, students, alumni, and partners to fully embrace the Strategic Plan, saying it will serve as a roadmap to position Egerton University as a centre of excellence and innovation in the region.
