Egerton University is mourning the loss of its former Chancellor, Professor Shem Oyoo Wandiga, who led the university from 2013 to 2019. A well-respected environmental chemist and experienced academic leader, Prof. Wandiga is remembered for his leadership and his dedication to improving the University’s academic and research reputation.
During his six years in office, Prof. Wandiga was a vital part of university life. He oversaw graduation ceremonies and awarded degrees to thousands of graduates. Beyond these formal events, he was a constant presence at the University and represented Egerton University in Kenya’s higher education community and beyond.
His time as Chancellor coincided with significant growth for the University, especially in research and innovation. One of the major achievements was Egerton University being recognized as an African Centre of Excellence in Climate Smart Agriculture. This acknowledgement boosted the university’s standing in climate change adaptation and agricultural research, which fit well with its original mission. Prof. Wandiga often expressed pride in this honour, seeing it as a sign of the University’s increasing ability to support national and continental development goals.
He also oversaw crucial improvements in the University’s academic facilities. In 2016, the J.D. Rockefeller Research Library at Utafiti Building, Main Campus, expanded to include The Foster Library, which added over 3,500 specialized books and scientific documents to the University’s research collection. This enhancement of library resources improved postgraduate training and provided scholars with better access to important reference materials for their advanced studies.
Prof. Wandiga engaged in strategic discussions about the changing landscape of higher education in Kenya. During a Special Senate meeting in 2016, he highlighted the rapid growth of universities, rising student enrolment, and ongoing funding challenges. He stressed the importance of stronger governance structures, better financial accountability and sustainable resource management to ensure the quality and sustainability of public universities.
Egerton University honours Prof. Wandiga as a Chancellor who balanced ceremonial roles with meaningful involvement in the University’s academic and strategic growth. His contributions will always be part of the institution’s history and its ongoing pursuit of excellence.
The University sends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the broader academic community. May his soul rest in peace.
