EGERTON
UNIVERSITY
Remarks By The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage During The First Years Address
Venue: Main Campus, Njoro
Date: Thursday, 21st August, 2025
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed faculty and staff, and above all, our vibrant first-year students of the 2025–2026 academic year, welcome!
Congratulations! Today marks the start of an incredible journey. You’ve worked hard to earn your place at Egerton University, one of Kenya’s leading institutions of higher learning and the excitement in this hall reflects the promise you carry. You’ve joined a proud tradition of excellence, and we are delighted to have you.
Let me begin with an important matter; government scholarships, banding, and HELB loans. I know this is at the top of many minds. Under the Government’s Funding Model, students are placed in bands that determine the level of scholarship, loan, and household contribution. Those who qualified for government scholarships should rest assured processing is underway. For those relying on HELB loans, our Student Finance Office is ready to guide you on disbursements and timelines. We are committed to walking this journey with you so that financing your education does not stand in the way of your academic success.
Now, let me give you a snapshot of Egerton University. We are a vibrant, diverse academic community with a strong heritage in agriculture, education, and innovation offering programmes in agriculture, engineering and technology, natural resources, business and economics, arts and social sciences, health sciences, and more.
As you begin this chapter, allow me to share some key points for your success:
- Prioritize your academics. Unlike secondary school, there will be no bells or constant monitoring. You are now responsible for managing your time, attending lectures, submitting assignments on schedule, and keeping track of deadlines. Avoid resits, suspensions, or delays and aim to graduate on time and with pride in your achievements.
- Master the Student Portal. It is your lifeline that houses the academic calendar, examination timetables, hostel booking, results, and official announcements. Activate your login credentials early, and check it regularly to stay informed.
- Uphold academic integrity. Examination malpractice carries severe consequences, including expulsion. Your degree should reflect your own effort, honesty, and dedication. Integrity is not just a rule it is the foundation of your future.
- Use social media wisely. The internet is powerful, but it can build or destroy reputations. Avoid inappropriate content especially explicit images or videos on platforms like TikTok. Remember, Kenya’s Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act imposes penalties for online offences. Protect both your name and that of this university.
- Engage responsibly in extracurricular activities. Clubs, sports, arts, leadership, and volunteer work will enrich your experience and develop you as a well-rounded graduate. But whatever you do carry yourself with respect, maturity, and responsibility.
Dear students, you are stepping into adulthood, with greater freedom and greater responsibility. Your success will be shaped not only by the knowledge you gain here, but by the character you build.
So once again, on behalf of the Chancellor, University Council, Management, Senate, staff, and continuing students welcome to Egerton University, where we transform lives through quality education. We believe in you, we are here for you, and we look forward to seeing you thrive.
Thank you.
