University Conducts Orientation for Staff

Egerton University held a two-day orientation to warmly welcome recently recruited staff members into its diverse and growing community. 

Egerton University held a two-day orientation to warmly welcome recently recruited staff members into its diverse and growing community. The event, which took place at the University’s Main Campus, was an important occasion to integrate these individuals into the institution’s culture and highlight their roles in driving the University’s mission forward. Present were key figures from the University Management, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage, who offered inspiring words to set the tone for the new recruits.

Prof. Kibwage congratulated the new staff for successfully navigating the interview process and emphasized the weight of responsibility each new member carries. The Vice Chancellor stressed the importance of punctuality and accountability, stating that arriving late to work or meetings is unacceptable. He reminded the new staff that their role is critical in supporting students and contributing to the university's culture of learning, which is at the heart of its mission.

He emphasized the importance of confidentiality, particularly for administrators handling sensitive information, and urged everyone to uphold high standards in their daily responsibilities. “Our students depend on us not only for education but for guidance, and it is imperative that we all work cohesively to support them,” he remarked.

Prof. Kibwage also called on technologists to assist lecturers in preparing for presentations and emphasized that absenteeism without a valid reason is unacceptable. The daily reporting time of 8:00 a.m. and departure at 5:00 p.m. must be adhered to, ensuring that duties are carried out efficiently.

The acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration, Finance, and Planning), Prof. Richard M.S. Mulwa echoed the sentiment of striving for excellence. He highlighted that Egerton University is recognized as one of the seven “Class A” universities in Kenya, an achievement that must be safeguarded through continuous improvement.

Prof. Mulwa also emphasized research as a core pillar of the University's mission. He encouraged staff to collaborate and attend international conferences, noting that building each other up through knowledge sharing is essential for growth. "Egerton is a place for knowledge exchange, not competition," he said, urging staff to also explore opportunities in the growing digital economy.

Mr Leonard Chesang’, the acting Registrar (HCA), provided an insightful overview of the University’s organizational structure, grounded in the Universities Act of 2012 and its 2023 Statutes. This overview was crucial for new staff to understand their roles within the larger framework of the institution.

A Guided Tour of Campus Life

Day two of the orientation saw the staff taken on a tour of key university facilities, including Tatton Agricultural Park and the iconic Lord Egerton Castle. This experience offered them a glimpse into the rich history and diverse resources of the institution.

This marked the first staff orientation in several years and set a positive, forward-looking tone for the future. The event underscored Egerton University’s commitment to fostering a supportive and productive environment for its staff, ensuring they are well-equipped to contribute to the institution’s success.
