Course objective

To equip participants on the theoretical and practical aspects of livestock feed production, feed processing, feed formulation and quality control. It will enable practitioners formulate feeds which meet the supply of all the nutrients required by farm animals.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. identify locally available raw materials and their nutritional values in order to optimize their use in livestock nutrition
  2. Assess animal’s nutritional needs depending on production
  3. Know the nutrients and their functions that are required to formulate animal feeds at least cost.
  4. Formulate feed rations for respective livestock species
  5. Produce, secure quality feeds pastures and fodders for animal feeding

 

Practical 1: Assessment of pastures and fodder, stage of harvesting

Practical 2: Silage making, hay cutting

Practical 3: Sampling procedures and submission to the laboratory for analysis

Practical 4: Ration Formulation process of a feed for livestock of interest including TMR

Practical 5: Dry season feeding
