On the second day of the 2nd Triennial RUFORUM Conference, discussions centred on the urgent need for African universities to align their efforts toward work readiness and transformative education. The panel on "Work Readiness: Transformative Efforts by African Universities" was opened by Egerton University Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage, who delivered a speech on behalf of Kenya’s Principal Secretary at the State Department for Higher Education and Research Dr Beatrice Inyangala.

The Principal Secretary emphasized the need for transformative investments in higher education to address Africa’s challenges and unlock opportunities for the continent's young people.
In the address, Dr Inyangala highlighted the necessity of enhancing investment in higher education to address the continental challenges Africa faces today. She emphasized that transforming higher education is not just an option but an imperative for inclusive, sustainable development driven by science and technology. The speech underscored the importance of aligning tertiary education with the continent's needs, particularly in the face of inadequate infrastructure and high young people unemployment.
The Principal Secretary also identified emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, which can be leveraged to revolutionize higher education. She pointed out the potential of well-educated researchers, modern technological integration in curricula, and the growing diversity of career paths. Strengthening partnerships between universities and industry, along with transnational collaborations, will be crucial in empowering young people and fostering innovation.
