First Years Urged to Observe ‘10 to 10’ Rule, Avoid Risky Behaviours

08 October 2026

By Kurian Musa

First-year students at Egerton University have been urged to strictly observe the University’s ‘10 to 10’ rule, which regulates visits between male and female students’ hostels during designated sleeping hours.

Addressing the new learners during the ongoing first-year orientation programme, the Chief Halls Officer reminded students that, under the University Students’ Handbook, male students are not permitted to visit female hostels, and vice versa, between 10.00 p.m. and 10.00 a.m.

The students were cautioned against engaging in irresponsible reproductive health behaviours that could negatively affect their academic progress and wellbeing. Female students, in particular, were encouraged to make responsible choices and avoid unplanned pregnancies that could disrupt their studies.

The Chief Halls Officer also reminded students to adhere to hostel safety regulations, including the prohibition against cooking in rooms. Students were warned against possessing banned electrical appliances, including water heaters, which can overload electrical systems and cause fires, property damage and endanger other residents.

During the session, first-year students raised questions about whether the rule could affect academic activities, particularly class discussions involving male and female students that extend beyond 10.00 p.m.

The students were advised to plan their academic engagements within the permitted hours and make effective use of classrooms, libraries and other University learning resources during the day.

The Dean of Students also reminded the learners to be their classmates’ and roommates’ keepers by looking out for one another. Students were encouraged to report to the relevant University authorities if a roommate was unusually absent for more than two days. The measure, the Dean noted, is intended to enhance students’ safety and ensure that any concerns are identified and addressed promptly.

The University urged the new students to familiarize themselves with the Students’ Handbook and comply with institutional regulations as part of responsible campus life.

The orientation programme is equipping first years with essential information on academic, social, health, safety and residential matters as they begin their studies at the University.
