Egerton University’s rugby team, the 'Egerton Wasps', has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the prestigious KRU Championship at Nakuru Athletic Club (NAC).
The victory, secured on Sunday, April 5th, during the Easter Weekend tournament, marks a significant chapter in the university’s sporting history and signals the rise of a formidable rugby force.
The tournament, organized by the Kenya Rugby Union to celebrate NAC’s 100 years, attracted top teams from across the country.
Egerton Wasps participated actively, demonstrating resilience and determination throughout the competition.
The team faced a challenging start in the final, trailing Nakuru RFC II 0–17 at halftime. However, their fighting spirit shone through in the second half as they mounted an incredible comeback, ultimately winning 21–17 and clinching the championship title.
Leading up to the final, the Wasps showcased their strength in the knockout stages. After finishing second in their pool, they dispatched KMTC Nakuru with a convincing 22–0 victory in the quarterfinals.
They then continued their impressive run with a 22–7 win over Rift Valley Institute of Technology in the semifinals, setting the stage for a dramatic final encounter.
The culmination of their efforts was marked by an electrifying second-half performance that stunned spectators and opponents alike.
The team’s resilience and unity were on full display as they overturned a significant deficit to claim the title, demonstrating that they are a force to be reckoned with in Kenyan rugby.
In his office this morning ,the trophy was officially received by Prof. George Muthaa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Finance, and Planning.
The trophy was presented by team manager Pauljam Mwaniki, organizing secretary Gaspah Kamau, and team captain Collins Omuodo, as a collective effort behind the victory.
Prof. Muthaa congratulated the team and praised their dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship.
This victory is more than a trophy; it signifies the emergence of Egerton University as a powerhouse in Kenyan rugby.
