Egerton University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage, has officially welcomed the University’s new first-year students, congratulating them on earning their place at the institution and urged them to embrace responsibility and discipline as they begin their academic journey.Speaking during the first-year students’ orientation programme on Monday, 24th August 2026, at Main Campus, Njoro, Prof. Kibwage described university life as an exciting and transformative stage that offers opportunities for academic growth and personal development.

The Vice-Chancellor reminded the students that the greater freedom and independence associated with university life must be accompanied by responsibility and wise decision-making. “University gives you freedom, but freedom comes with responsibility,” he emphasized.He encouraged the students to take their studies seriously from the outset by attending lectures, completing assignments, reading widely and consulting their lecturers whenever necessary. He stressed that academic success is built through discipline, consistency and commitment, rather than last-minute preparation during examination times.Prof. Kibwage also cautioned the students against drug and substance abuse, warning them not to give in to peer pressure or engage in irresponsible behaviour that could jeopardize their health, academic progress and future.
He urged them to choose their friends wisely, noting that the company they keep can significantly influence their decisions and personal growth. Students were encouraged to build positive friendships with individuals who inspire them to work hard, attend classes and pursue their goals.On relationships and personal conduct, the Vice-Chancellor called upon the students to respect themselves and one another, while avoiding violence, harassment, sexual misconduct and other behaviour that may put themselves or others at risk. He further encouraged students facing personal or emotional challenges to seek help from the available University support systems rather than suffer in silence.

Prof. Kibwage also emphasized responsible use of social media, urging students to think before they post anything. He cautioned against online abuse, misinformation, impersonation, cheating and actions that could damage the reputation of others.Beyond academics, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged the first-year students to embrace a holistic university experience by participating in sports, clubs and societies, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and other co-curricular activities.

He reminded them that university life should not be limited to moving between hostels and lecture halls, but should also provide opportunities to develop leadership, social and practical skills, discovering talents that will make them well-rounded individuals.Prof. Kibwage concluded by reminding the students that they are ultimately responsible for the choices they make and encouraged them to use their freedom wisely.
