Egerton University in Njoro Sub-County played host to Nakuru County Commissioner Mr. Loyford Kibaara in a major tree planting exercise that saw 2,500 trees planted within the institution.
The initiative, held under the county’s monthly environmental drive, received support from Egerton University’s climate-smart agriculture program, with tree seedlings sponsored by Equity Bank’s Green Energy Initiative.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, during the planting session was the Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization, Prof. Nzula Kitaka.
Mr. Kibaara earlier on met with Prof. Kibwage for a security briefing at the Vice Chancellor’s boardroom and was introduced to members of the University Council, who were holding a separate meeting.
The tree planting was part of a larger strategy by the Office of the County Commissioner, in collaboration with area Chiefs, to meet the Presidential directive of growing 15 billion trees by the year 2030.
Notably, Egerton University’s Acting Estates Manager, Mr. Kobia Mucheke, and his team dug 2,500 holes, surpassing the county’s monthly target of 1,500 trees demonstrating the university's commitment to sustainability. Mr Kobia concurred with Prof. Kitaka that the University will grow the trees that the Commissioner planted in the University through the Shamba system.
The area Chief, present at the event, pledged to collaborate closely with Egerton University and local security agencies to safeguard the planted trees, ensuring long-term environmental impact.
