Egerton University has effected changes in its senior management following the conclusion of the tenure and retirement of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage on 4 October 2026, ushering in a new phase of institutional leadership focused on continuity, effective governance and the advancement of the University's strategic priorities.
Prof. George Mungiria Muthaa, formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Finance and Planning (DVC-AFP), has assumed office as Acting Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Julius Kipkemboi has been appointed Acting DVC-AFP, while Prof. Bernard Aduda continues to serve as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs.
The changes are intended to ensure continuity in executive leadership and university operations as the institution progresses towards the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor. The new management arrangement brings together complementary expertise in educational leadership, university administration, scientific research and academic governance to support Egerton University's mandate of teaching, research, innovation and community engagement.
Prof. George Muthaa: Educational Leadership and Strategic Management
A professor of educational management and social scientist, he holds doctoral and master's qualifications in Educational Management, a Bachelor of Education in Economics and Business Studies, and a Master of Business Administration specialising in Strategic Management. His additional professional training includes leadership development, information and communication technology, the knowledge society and ethics in higher education.
Before his appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muthaa served as Egerton University's DVC-AFP, a strategic portfolio supporting institutional administration, resource management, planning and implementation of university policies.
His previous academic and administrative leadership experience includes service at Chuka University, where he held several positions, including founding Chair of the Department of Education, Director of the Board of Postgraduate Studies, Dean and Director of Embu Campus and DVC-AFP Turkana University College. These responsibilities provided him with experience in academic governance, postgraduate training, campus administration and institutional development.
As Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muthaa is responsible for providing overall executive leadership and coordinating the implementation of the University's policies and strategic objectives. He will work with the University Council, University Management Board, Senate, staff, students and other stakeholders to sustain institutional operations, strengthen performance and advance the University's academic and development agenda.
His combined experience in academic leadership, strategic management and university administration provides a valuable foundation for guiding the institution during the leadership transition.

Before his latest appointment, he served as Director of Income Generating Units (IGUs) at Egerton University. The directorate provides strategic guidance to university units engaged in revenue-generating activities, supporting efforts to diversify income sources, improve institutional resource utilisation and strengthen financial sustainability.
His professional engagement extends beyond university administration. He has served on Kenya's National Scientific and Ethics Committee under the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) and represented Kenya on the UNESCO Executive Board from 2019 to 2022.
In his new role, Prof. Kipkemboi will support the Acting Vice-Chancellor in overseeing administrative and financial operations, institutional planning, resource management and policy implementation. His experience in university leadership and income-generating activities is particularly relevant to strengthening operational efficiency, financial accountability and the University's capacity to mobilise resources.
Prof. Bernard Aduda: Continuity in Academic Leadership
Prof. Bernard Aduda continues as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, providing continuity in the coordination of the University's academic functions.
The division plays a central role in academic programme development, teaching and learning, curriculum implementation and the maintenance of academic standards. It also supports the coordination of research and other academic activities within the University's institutional mandate.
His continued leadership is important in sustaining academic programmes, supporting staff and students, strengthening research and innovation, and ensuring that the University's academic priorities remain aligned with its broader strategic objectives.
Working alongside the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Acting DVC-AFP, Prof. Aduda will continue to support coordination across the University's academic and administrative structures.
Sustaining Institutional Performance and Strategic Priorities
The management changes come at an important point in Egerton University's institutional development, when effective leadership, financial sustainability, administrative efficiency and academic performance remain critical priorities.
The complementary experience of Prof. Muthaa in educational management and strategic leadership, Prof. Kipkemboi in scientific research and university administration, and Prof. Aduda in academic leadership provides a foundation for coordinated institutional management.
As the University progresses towards the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor, the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Acting DVC-AFP are expected to work closely with the University Management Board and other governance organs to maintain operational stability, promote accountability and advance the University's strategic objectives.
Key priorities include sustaining quality teaching and learning, strengthening research and innovation, improving resource mobilisation, enhancing financial resilience and ensuring efficient service delivery across the institution.
The transition underscores the importance of continuity, collaboration and responsible stewardship in safeguarding Egerton University's academic mission. It also reinforces the need for coordinated leadership to address emerging challenges in higher education while strengthening the University's contribution to scientific advancement and national development.
