NJORO, KENYA – Egerton University alumni are demonstrating how higher education can transform communities, create employment and open career pathways for graduating students through entrepreneurship, innovation and professional networks.
During last Thursdays Alumni Connect webinar themed Agricultural Innovation, Community Transformation, Youth Empowerment and Graduate Opportunities, two alumni shared how they are applying agricultural knowledge to improve livelihoods in Kenya and Uganda. Every Thursday, the webinar takes place for high value networking and industry relations sesson among alumni members.
Akejo Gordon Victor of GAO Uganda Limited and Aipa of Green AgriHub Initiative illustrated how university training can translate into enterprises that address food insecurity, unemployment and climate change while creating opportunities for young professionals.
In northern Uganda, Gordon's organisation has reached more than 40,000 smallholder farmers across nine districts through agricultural extension, solar-powered irrigation and agribusiness development.
The enterprise has also created employment opportunities for approximately 21,000 young people, demonstrating the potential of agricultural entrepreneurship to stimulate rural economies.
Closer home, Aipa's Green AgriHub Initiative is transforming livelihoods in Turkana County through crop production, beekeeping and pasture development.
The initiative has trained more than 1,000 farmers in climate-smart agriculture and reached approximately 15,000 people, primarily young people, while supporting communities transitioning towards agro-pastoralism.
Beyond agricultural production, the initiative promotes nutrition education, savings through table banking and community participation in sustainable development.
The webinar particularly highlighted how Egerton University's alumni network can bridge the gap between academic training and industry employment.
Gordon offered mentorship to students and graduates interested in applying for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, while Aipa expressed willingness to connect students with agricultural extension officers and partner farms for practical training and voluntary service.
These commitments present opportunities for students to acquire industry experience, establish professional relationships and strengthen their employability before graduation.
The discussions also identified potential partnerships in internships, applied research, agricultural technology transfer, enterprise incubation and professional mentorship.
Green AgriHub Initiative specifically identified opportunities for collaboration with Egerton University in livestock feeding research, pasture production and certification support for beekeepers and pasture seed producers.
Students were encouraged to embrace digital skills, entrepreneurship, volunteering and innovation rather than depending exclusively on conventional salaried employment.
The Alumni Connect platform continues to demonstrate the importance of maintaining strong relationships between the University and its graduates.
By connecting students with alumni-led enterprises, industry professionals and community development organisations, Egerton University is strengthening graduate transition into employment while extending its research and innovation impact beyond campus.
The message is clear: Egerton University's alumni are not merely beneficiaries of education; they are partners in community transformation, job creation and the development of the next generation of professionals.
