Egerton University’s Faculty of Law Secures Five-Year Licence Renewal

02 November 2026

By John Emeripus

NJORO, KENYA | November 2, 2026

Egerton University’s Faculty of Law has secured a renewed licence from the Council of Legal Education (CLE) to continue offering its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programme for a further five years, marking a significant milestone in the University's commitment to legal education and the training of future legal professionals.
The renewal, communicated through a letter dated October 30, 2026, grants the University authority to continue offering the LL.B. programme for five years, effective October 13, 2026, subject to conditions set by the Council.

The development has been welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Ruth Aura, who described the renewal as a major milestone for Egerton University and its law students. She noted that the decision was an important endorsement of the University's continued commitment to providing quality legal education and strengthening the Faculty's capacity to prepare competent legal professionals. The renewed licence underscores the importance of maintaining quality standards, strengthening academic capacity and ensuring that legal training remains responsive to professional and regulatory requirements.

Prof Ruth Aura, Dean Faculty of Law

In its communication addressed to Egerton University Vice-Chancellor, the Council outlined several conditions that the University must fulfil during the licensing period.
Among the key requirements is a restriction on student admissions, with the University required to admit no more than 150 students into the LL.B. programme annually, irrespective of the number of intake cycles conducted within the year. The Council has also directed the University to submit a comprehensive graduate tracer study report within 60 days of the licence issuance. The report is expected to provide information on graduates' employability rates, career progression trajectories and stakeholder satisfaction levels.

On academic staffing, the University is required to strengthen the Faculty's human resource capacity to ensure compliance with the Council's prescribed standards. This includes reviewing and aligning its Human Resource Policies and Procedures Manual with the unique staffing, academic, professional and operational requirements of the LL.B. programme.
Additionally, the University must develop a staff workload policy demonstrating compliance with the prescribed standards on workload allocation and staff deployment. The Council has further directed the recruitment and appointment of at least five additional qualified teaching staff for the Faculty of Law.
The Council emphasised that the University must continue conducting its affairs in accordance with the stipulated conditions and maintain the quality standards prescribed by the Legal Education Act and the Council.

It also noted that the University is expected to comply with additional requirements contained in the full inspection report accompanying the renewal communication.
The five-year renewal provides Egerton University with an opportunity to consolidate the Faculty of Law's academic and institutional capacity while strengthening its contribution to legal education and professional training. For the University and its law students, the renewal represents an important step in sustaining the programme, enhancing the quality of training and preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to the legal profession and society.
