Egerton University Triumphs at Inaugural East African Moot Court Competition in Arusha

Egerton University Triumphs at Inaugural East African Moot Court Competition in Arusha

Egerton University proudly represented Kenya and emerged victorious at the inaugural East African Moot Court Competition held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 15th to 16th August 2024.

The event, judged by the Pan-African Lawyers Union (PALU) and organised by the East African Law Students Association, saw Egerton University outshine other participants, solidifying Kenya's position at the top of the competition.

The competition was a historic event, bringing together over 16 law students from select East African countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

The Egerton University team, comprised of Mr. William Anthony Kanani, Ms. Evelyn Mogere, Ms. Said Salim, and Ms. Pauline Nduta, delivered an exceptional performance that earned them the top spot, carrying the university's flag high and making a significant mark on the regional stage.

Reflecting on the victory, William Anthony Kanani, a law student at Egerton University, expressed his heartfelt gratitude: "As I conclude my mooting journey and approach the end of my fourth year LLB program, I want to express gratitude to everyone who contributed to our success.” His sentiments were echoed by his teammates, who felt deeply honoured to represent both the university and the country in this pioneering East African moot court competition.

The students attributed their success to the robust support and guidance they received from Egerton University's leadership and faculty. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, was specifically lauded for his unwavering support through the provision of financial resources, human capital, and invaluable advice, which played a pivotal role in propelling the team to victory. The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Ruth Aura, was also recognized for her instrumental role in steering the law school to new heights.

Dr. Aura's leadership has been pivotal in distinguishing Egerton University Law School as a centre of excellence in legal education within the region. Under her guidance, the law school has made tremendous strides, offering cutting-edge training that produces legal scholars of the highest calibre.

This achievement at the moot court competition is a testament to the exceptional education and training provided by the university, which is now comparable to none in the region.

The competition, held at the High Court of Tanzania in Arusha, featured a rigorous debate on the laws and procedures of the East African Community (EAC) and the East African Court of Justice (EACJ).

The event provided a unique platform for law students to showcase their knowledge and skills in judicial proceedings, fostering a deeper understanding of the legal frameworks governing the EAC and EACJ.

The inaugural East African Law Moot Court Competition aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of law students in the region regarding judicial proceedings of the EAC. PALU, which prides itself on nurturing the continent's next generation of legal minds, played a crucial role in the event's success.

The competition is expected to become an annual event, providing a continued opportunity for law students across East Africa to engage in meaningful legal debates and further their understanding of regional law.

This means that Egerton University is not only committed to excellence in legal education but also underscores the potential of Kenyan law students to excel on the international stage.

The university community, led by Director Marketing and Resource Mobilization Prof Nzula Kitaka celebrates this outstanding achievement. “This is big news and we look forward to future successes as Egerton continues to set the standard in legal education and advocacy within the region,” she pointed out.

The win at the East African Moot Court Competition is an inspiration to other students and a clear indication of high standards of training, discipline and responsibility that the students observe in their studies.
