The continental competition brought together outstanding student innovators, university leaders, diplomats and development partners from across Africa to showcase cutting-edge innovations aimed at addressing pressing socio-economic challenges. The event focused on promoting youth entrepreneurship, strengthening technical exchanges and enhancing educational collaboration between China and African institutions.

Egerton University’s teams emerged among the competition's top performers, earning Gold and Silver medals in recognition of their outstanding innovation projects and demonstrating the institution's growing influence in nurturing practical, market-oriented solutions to Africa's development challenges.

Leading the university delegation was Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage, who joined organisers in celebrating the award-winning teams during the colourful medal presentation ceremony. He congratulated the student innovators for their resilience, creativity and commitment to developing impactful solutions while balancing rigorous academic programmes.

Prof. Kibwage said the students had demonstrated that African universities possess the capacity to generate world-class innovations capable of transforming communities and industries. He noted that the recognition reflects Egerton University's commitment to producing graduates equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with the practical skills needed to solve real-world problems.

Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilisation Prof. Nzula Kitaka also hailed the achievement, describing it as a significant milestone in the university's strategic agenda of embedding innovation across teaching, research and community engagement.

She observed that innovation has become a central pillar of the university's curriculum, enabling students to transform classroom research into commercially viable products and services with the potential to create employment and stimulate economic growth.

“The success achieved by our students demonstrates that our deliberate investment in innovation is yielding tangible results. We are creating an ecosystem where ideas are nurtured from conception to commercialisation,” she said.

The awards ceremony was presided over by the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, who challenged young innovators to ensure their projects deliver lasting societal impact beyond academic competitions.

Prof. Abdulrazak urged students to pursue implementation and scalability instead of abandoning promising ideas after exhibitions and contests. He said Africa requires innovative solutions capable of addressing unemployment, food insecurity, healthcare challenges and climate change.

“Your innovations should not end with winning medals. They must become practical solutions that improve lives, create jobs and contribute to sustainable economic development,” he told participants.

The competition was co-organised by the Confucius Institute at Egerton University, Nanjing Agricultural University and Kabarak University. According to the Confucius Institute, the annual competition serves as an international platform that encourages collaboration between universities, industry and governments while nurturing entrepreneurial talent capable of contributing to global sustainable development.

Student teams competed across undergraduate and postgraduate categories, presenting innovations designed to tackle challenges in agriculture, environmental sustainability, engineering, digital technology and community development. Judges assessed projects based on originality, technical feasibility, social impact, commercial potential and scalability.

By securing Gold and Silver medals, Egerton University's innovators have earned continental recognition while positioning themselves for broader international exposure and collaboration. Their success strengthens the university's standing as a premier institution for academic excellence, applied research and innovation-driven education.

The student mentors were Prof Paul Kimurto, Director Agro-Science Park Egerton University, another one Dr Bernard Karanja Faculty of Agriculture. They were elated by the performance saying the students had done their best.
