Egerton’s Mirriam Karwitha Charimbu is 2021-22 African Futures Research Leadership Program Fellow

The Alliance for African Partnership (AAP), has accepted its second cohort of African Futures Research Leadership program comprising some 10 outstanding female scholars from its member universities.

Among them is Dr. Marriam Karwitha Charimbu of Egerton University who will participate in the “Evaluating New Tools for Farmers: A Health and Economic Analysis of Redesigned Garden Hoes project”.

Dr. Charimbu is a crop production and protection specialist from Egerton University, Kenya. She has research interests in crop pest and disease management, impact of climate change on crop production and climate smart agricultural production technologies. Dr. Charimbu has worked with farmers, farmer groups and extension service providers to reduce crop losses, increase food availability and improved farmer livelihoods.

She hopes that her participation in the programme “will enable me to make impact on the lives of smallholder farmers in Arid and Semi-arid areas of Kenya.”

The African Futures Research Leadership, which first began in 2019, is a competitive program set in place to bring early-career female researchers from AAP’s Member institutions, and have them conduct research in a field that aligns with AAP’s six priority areas: agri-food systems, water, energy, and environment, youth empowerment, education, culture, and health and nutrition.

Egerton University is among the 11 AAP African member universities.

The University Vice Chancellor, Management Board and Council wishes to thank The Alliance for African Partnership (AAP) accepting to train one Egerton University female academic staff in its second cohort of African Futures Research Leadership program and also wish Miriam success in her Postgraduate training.
