Ladies and gentlemen,
Today marks a momentous occasion as we celebrate the successful completion of the 2023 REU-REEU Programme, a remarkable collaboration between Bowie State University in the United States and Egerton University in Kenya. It gives me immense pleasure to stand before you and extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have made this journey possible.
Though the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the program from proceeding in 2020 and 2021, the resilience of our institutions and the unwavering support from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture paved the way for its resumption in 2022. Last year, we hosted 11 students from eight U.S. universities, forming lasting connections between our institutions and faculties.
And now, in 2023, we take immense pride in hosting 17 undergraduate students from nine esteemed U.S. universities, including Bowie State University, once again. Under the guidance of dedicated Mentor-Professors, these students have delved into diverse research projects in agriculture, biological sciences, and environmental science, among others. Their experiences have contributed to their academic growth and fostered cross-cultural understanding and global perspectives.
Throughout their eight weeks at Egerton University, the REU-REEU Fellows have received mentorship from our esteemed professors, engaged in professional development workshops, and embarked on insightful visits to research stations, farmers, and international laboratories like ILRI and ICIPE. Additionally, they have had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich Kenyan culture and experience the beauty of our nation with a memorable visit to the Rift Valley and the Masai Mara National Game Park.
I sincerely thank Prof. Anne Osano, the Programme Director, and Prof. Joshua O. Ogendo, the Programme Coordinator, for their leadership and commitment in fostering this collaborative effort. Your dedication has been instrumental in making this exchange programme a resounding success.
As we celebrate the achievements of the 2023 REU-REEU Programme, let us remember that education knows no boundaries. It is through such partnerships that we create a network of knowledge, transcending geographical borders and cultural differences. Our collaboration has strengthened ties between Bowie State University and Egerton University, and I am confident that this is only the beginning of a long and fruitful journey.
To the REU-REEU Fellows, I commend you for your passion and dedication in pursuit of knowledge. Your experiences here have expanded your horizons, and I encourage you to carry the spirit of collaboration and curiosity as you embark on future endeavours.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm invitation to all present here to join us for the African Dinner at Lord Egerton Castle, where we shall celebrate not only the successful completion of this Programme but also the bonds of friendship and understanding that have been forged between our institutions and nations.
