Egerton University has revised its ten-year Strategic Plan (2005 – 2015) and come up with a Strategic Plan for the period 2009 – 2015. Egerton University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Kenya. It started as Egerton Farm School, founded in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, a British national. In 1950, the School was upgraded to an Agricultural College. The Egerton Agricultural College Ordinance was enacted in 1955.
In 1979, the Government of Kenya and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded a major expansion of the institution. In 1986, Egerton Agricultural College was gazetted as a constituent college of the University of Nairobi. The following year, 1987, marked the establishment of Egerton University through an Act of Parliament.
Landmarks in the University’s development include: Opening of new campuses (Laikipia Campus College, Kisii Campus College, Nakuru Town Campus, College of Distance Education at Kenyatta Campus, and Eastern Campus College at Chuka); establishment of new faculties after 1987 (Engineering and Technology, Environment and Resources Development, Commerce, Health Sciences, and Faculty of Humanities and Development Studies at Laikipia Campus College); establishment of Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies; establishment of the Office of Alumni Services and Student Placement; creation of the Directorates of Quality Assurance, Planning and Development, Student Affairs, and Resource Mobilisation; undertaking major research projects;

Kisii Campus College and Eastern Campus College at Chuka have now grown into Kisii University College and Chuka University College, respectively.
Egerton University’s Vision is to be a world-class university for the advancement of humanity. Its mission is to generate significant knowledge and offer exemplary education to contribute to national and global development. The core values that guide the University’s activities are: integrity, transparency and accountability; passion for excellence and devotion to duty; and social fairness. The Plan takes into consideration the universal mandate of a university, which includes: teaching; research, and preservation and dissemination of knowledge; societal responsibility;and offering advisory and consultancy services.
The starting point in the preparation of the Plan was an identification of the national challenges and an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the University, the opportunities available to it, and the challenges facing it. On this basis the institution’s strategic issues were formulated and its objectives set.
