Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT
Security department is charged with the responsibility of providing security services to the university. It is headed by the Chief Security Officer, assisted by security officer, Assistant Security Officer and other staff.
The department has the following sections:

  • Administration section
  • Report office/reception/customer care section
  • Crime
  • Fire and safety
  • Dog section
DUTIES OF THE DEPARTMENT INCLUDE
  1. Protection of the university property and life of the staff and students as well as other general safety measures.
  2. Investigating cases reported e.g. theft, assault, loss of property, missing persons and gender conflicts. e.t.c.
  3. Visiting scenes of crime and preserving them.
  4. Enforce traffic rules within the university.
  5. Liaise with Kenya Police within the district and other agencies to enforce laws as well as the university rules and regulations.
  6. Assess security threats and vulnerabilities within the university and advice the administration accordingly.
  7. Carry out initial counseling to students before referred to the Dean of students’ office

Sections

SECTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT
Administration section

This is the administrative section of the department, the staff of this section deal with correspondences, training and all other functions other than security operations. This section comprises of the administrators, secretary and clerk.

Report office/reception

Record cases reported at the office and refer to the relevant section.
Maintenance of the Occurrence Book and other office equipments.
Secure prisoners arrested and hand them over to the crime section personnel for interrogation and further action.
Attend to visitors in the department and direct them to the respective sections/department.
Crime section
  • Visiting scenes of crime.
  • Preservation of crime scene
  • Investigating cases reported by staff, students and non staff.
  • Collection of intelligence.
  • Compiling cases files and report to the administration.
  • Apprehension of offenders and escort them to police station.
  • Giving evidence in court of law.
  • Conduct training to the personnel on crime prevention and investigation.
  • Enhance patrol and surveillance.
  • Interrogate arrested suspects.

Fire and safety section
  • Conduct Mock Fire drills
  • Put fire prevention measure in place.
  • Set up measures to prevent fire disasters
  • Conduct training of staff and students on dangers of fire.
  • Service of fire extinguishers and maintenance of fire equipments
  • Purchase fire fighting equipments.
  • Security personnel conducting Mock Fire
  • Identify fire risks/threats and mitigate.
  • Efficient response to emergencies by personnel with sufficient tools/resources.
  • Inspection of fire equipments.
  • Carry out fire audits.
Dog section
  • Conduct patrols within the university and its environment.
  • Train dogs purchased.
  • Conduct training of personnel posted to dog section.
  • Maintenance of security dogs.
