


This joint Master programme combines the best parts of the cooperating partners. You will study the fundamentals in limnology and applied limnology at the renowned BOKU University, in which the well-known IPGL-programme has been recently integrated into. In Kenya you will investigate unique tropical lakes and rivers, such as Lake Victoria - the world 2nd largest freshwater lake and the famous Kenyan Rift Valley lakes, which are habitats of millions of flamingos. You will be exposed to typical challenges in conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems in developing countries. At UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, you will study wetland management and interactions with local lively-hood, processes and modelling of ecosystems. The taught part will be concluded by groupwork, which gives you the opportunity to integrate the acquired knowledge together with other international students from different disciplines. After you have finished the 12-months taught period, you will prepare your M.Sc. research proposal, carry-out your research and write your thesis. The international joint-degree certificate will be awarded to you after 18-months.
Extra curricular activities
You will study in the beautiful town Vienna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its history, music, theatre, opera, plus various leisure opportunities and outdoor activities. Your stay in Kenya - the heart of Africa - near the famous parks, where you will be able to meet the “big-five”. You will be housed on the campus of Egerton University in our LWM-houses in 5 minutes walking distance to the laboratories and lecturing facilities. You will have the opportunity to meet many Kenyan and East-African students at the beautiful garden-like university campus. In The Netherlands you will stay in the historic old town of Delft with its scenic canals, and history of painters like Vermeer and the inventor of the microscope, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. You will be studying with a community of exclusively international students from all over the world.
Study conditions
Throughout your study you will be provided with proper housing, airport transfer, transport for fieldwork and fieldtrips, good internet facilities. Responsible academic and supporting staff will be available to solve eventual problems during your studies. In other words we will do our utmost best to let you study in a safe and comfortable environment.
Admission requirements
This master programme is intended for mid-career professionals with a background in biological or environmental sciences with a special interest in one of the following topics: aquatic ecology, limnology, wetland ecosystems, or aquatic resources management.
Requirements: the candidates for this joint programme are professionals with a bachelor’s degree preferably in Limnology, Environmental Science, or related fields. In principle, candidates should have about two to three years of practical or research experience since graduation. All applications are, however, considered on their individual merits. Since instruction and examinations are given in English, it is essential that participants have a good working knowledge of the English language.
