Introduction

The Faculty of Environment and Resources Development (FERD) was established in 1999.
The Faculty has the following three departments:

Currently the Faculty has 48 teaching staff and a total of 935 both undergraduate and graduate students registered under the different programmes offered in the Faculty. The departments apply a holistic approach in training in all the programmes

Vision

The faculty envisions being a centre of excellence in developing human resource
for the sustainable management of environmental resources for the
advancement of humanity. It strives to be acclaimed as a provider of high quality interdisciplinary training, research, information, consultancy and extension
services on the environmental, geographical and natural resource issues.

Mission


The mission of the faculty is principally to:

  • Train high calibre graduates with relevant knowledge and skills for
    careers in research, teaching, extension and consultancy.
  • Conduct multi-disciplinary and problem oriented research
  • Offer consultancy services in all aspects of environmental
    management
  • Create environmental awareness through outreach services.

The staff in FERD are involved in the following research/project activities
including:-

  • Pastoral Risk Management (PARIMA),
  • Njoro River Watershed Management Project
  • Indigenous Knowledge, Plant Conservation and Herbal Medicine,
  • Limnology of the Rift Valley Lakes
  • Policy Analysis for Participatory Poverty Alleviation (PAPPA)
  • Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA),
  • Energy and Rural Development
  • STD, HIV/AIDS
  • Land Use Impacts on Lake Naivasha Ecosystem
  • Environmental Climatology and Hydrology
  • Botanical Garden and Game Farming.

  • RESEARCH: The faculty has spearheaded research on key
    environmental issues like: Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity
    Conservation in the Dry Lands of Eastern and Central Africa, Sustainable
    Management of Watersheds, Pastoral Risk Management, Participatory
    Rural Appraisal, Population Conflicts and Internal Displacement in Kenya,
    and Migration and HIV/AIDS Risk in Kenya.
  • COLLABORATION: The faculty of Environment and Resources
    Development has establihsed linkages with other world class academic
    and research institutions like: University of Western Ontario Canada, Utah
    State University, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI),
    ASARECA, and National Environment Management Authority.
  • FACILITIES: The faculty is based at Egerton Universitys main campus at
    Njoro so our students have easy access to all university facilities. Besides,
    this, the faculty has modern laboratories that include: GIS Lab.
