About Egerton University

Egerton University is the premier Agricultural public University in Kenya.  It  has  however, broadened to other areas of research and teaching such as natural resources, applied sciences, education, computer science, medical sciences, education, engineering and business studies.

 The University’s main campus is located at Njoro, about 180 Kms northwest of Nairobi off Njoro-Mau Narok road. The famous Lake Nakuru, the home of beautiful lesser flamingoes is only 27 Kms away. The Nakuru Town Campus College is the other campus and is non-residential.

 The University has 3 constituent Colleges which are; Kisii University College, Laikipia University College and Chuka University College.  These are autonomous except for using the Senate of Egerton University.

History

Egerton University was started as an agricultural school in 1939 on land donated by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton. The school, which was meant to train large scale farmers in the Kenyan highlands, had its first students of three ex-British service men. In 1955, the school became a College through the Egerton College Ordinance.  In 1986, Egerton College became a constituent college of the University of Nairobi and in 1987 it became a full- pledged university through an Act of Parliament.

 Currently, the University offers 63 undergraduate degree, 46 masters degree, and 36 doctorate degree programmes in its various faculties.

There are also 8 diploma programmes and a number of certificate programmes.

 Egerton University’s mission is to participate in the discovery, transmission and preservation of knowledge and to stimulate the intellectual life, economic and cultural development of Kenya. To achieve this, the University has approximately 2000 members of staff who include over 500 highly qualified teaching staff who engage in a variety of research activities.

Njoro Campus

At Njoro Campus there is plenty of land, the campus sits on a 1000 acres of land and most of it is available for students’ use.

The campus altitude is 2225 meters above sea level. It receives an average of 1092 mm amount of rainfall in a year.

Programmes

The University offers unique programmes which includes the 2+2 twinning programme with Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, USA.  In this programme, students undertake a West Michigan curriculum for 2 years at Egerton University and proceed for another 2 years in West Michigan University.

The other unique programme is the collaborative masters in Applied Agricultural Economics, where students undertake one semester of course work at the University of Pretoria during their 2nd year of study.

 Admission Criteria

The admission criteria are as specified in the respective faculties.  Applications from all countries are considered subject to immigration requirements.   The mode of instruction in the University is English.  International students are welcomed to join this University.

Our Facilities

Library facilities

The University has a well equipped library which plays an active role in the university through supporting and enriching the university’s mandate to foster innovative research and teaching by selecting, organizing, disseminating and preserving information resources for the University community.

 The Library is well stocked with over 80,000 volumes of latest editions of information materials both in print and electronic formats, and offers various high quality information services to the university students, faculty and staff.  In addition to the print books and journals, the library has subscribed to a rich collection of electronic information resources comprising of over 20,000 e-journal titles, and e-books in various disciplines. These may be accessed within the library as well as outside the library through wireless network.   The library has 24 hours internet connectivity and is connected to the campus wide network through which the users may access the OPAC and the e-journals from their offices, labs and resource centers through the university website.

Accommodation and Catering facilities

We have some accommodation in Njoro Campus for those students who would like to reside on campus. It is available on first come first serve basis.

Catering facilities are available. There are limited facilities where students can cook for themselves.

Sports

The University has a modern sports field with a variety of sports such as; soccer, rugby, lawn tennis, basket ball, hockey, swimming and athletics.
