Department of Human Nutrition Programmes

Programmes offered at the FOND Department

The Department offers the following Programmes:-

  1. BSc. Foods Nutrition and Dietetics,
  2. MSc.  in Nutritional Sciences
  3. PhD. Nutritional Sciences

The programmes are also in line with the requirements of Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI)

BSc FOODS NUTRITION AND DIETETICS

Aim

The aim of the programme is to train graduates in foods, nutrition and dietetics

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics programme are to:

(a) Offer opportunities for students to develop professional competencies in the areas of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics, which will help them, improve the health and nutrition status of the people they will serve;

(b) Prepare students with professional competencies necessary for employment in institutions, industries and organizations related to their field of training or for self-employment; and

(c) Develop research skills in the area of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics aimed at improving the quality of life of individuals and communities.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

a) To be eligible for admission, candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as set out by Egerton University statutes. In addition,

b) Candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at the minimum C+ grade in the courses below:

Chemistry Physical Sciences

Mathematics or Physics Mathematics

Geography or any of the group IV subjects Geography or any of the Group IV subjects

(c) Candidates with a diploma in related areas from a recognized institution may be admitted, provided that they passed at credit level or above.

(d) Admission is also open to other degree holders with minimum entry requirements.

LOADING AND DURATION OF STUDY

(a) The programme extends over a period of four academic years and two to three years for in-service students based on the Credit-Factor transfer. A maximum of eight years is allowed to complete the programme with a minimum 184.5 CF

(b) Each academic year consists of two semesters, with fifteen (15) weeks of teaching and two (2) weeks of examination.

(c) Institutional Attachment is undertaken at the end of the third academic year.

Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences

OBJECTIVES

The course aims at giving students an advanced understanding of Nutritional Sciences at a master’s level. The course is designed to prepare students for teaching and research positions in colleges and universities. Students are also prepared for research, consulting and administrative positions in private and public

Requirements:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. The common regulations for the Master’s degree in the university as specified in the Egerton University statutes shall apply.
  2. Candidates for M.Sc. degree in Nutritional Sciences are required to have an Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics or related programme from Egerton University or any other institution recognized by Egerton University Senate.

DURATION OF STUDY

The Master of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences shall, in accordance with the rules and regulations for the Master’s degree programme of Egerton University, extend for a period of not less than eighteen (18) months and not more than thirty-six (36) months for full-time students, or not more than forty-eight (48) for part-time students.

Mode of study: Full time, evening classes

Duration: 1 ½ Academic years

Tuition Fees: 137,700 p.a.

PhD NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

- The entry requirements for a Ph.D. Degree Programme in the Department of Human Nutrition are as specified in the relevant section of University Statutes.

- A Ph.D. Programme applicant must submit a Research Project Proposal acceptable to the Department.

DURATION OF STUDY

Duration of study shall be as spelt out in the relevant sections of the University Statutes.
