Master of Science in Chemistry

Chemistry is the science that contributes most to the widest range of activities of modern life, from microelectronics to medicine and from foods to fuels. There is need for a better educated work-force to cope with the increasingly complex demands of a rapidly changing society. A diverse programme of graduate level courses would help to stimulate creative and flexible research interests. Such a programme would make the student grow in, intellect, in judgement, in competence and in confidence.
Programme Objectives
This postgraduate programme is designed to prepare chemists for careers in University teaching, research and in chemical industry. This objective is met by having programme containing courses in all main chemistry areas. The research project is intended to emphasise practical aspects of the course work and to provide training for chemistry researchers.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations for all Master degrees in the University shall apply.
The following shall be eligible for registration for the Master of Science degree in Chemistry.
i) A holder of a Bachelor of Science degree with at least Upper Second Class Honours in Chemistry either as a single subject or as one of the main subjects studied at B.Sc. level.
ii) A holder of a Bachelor of Education degree who has studied chemistry as a major subject and has attained at least an Upper Second Class Honours.
Course Structure and Duration
The Master's Programme in Chemistry will last for a minimum of 18 months, a maximum of 36 months and will be offered by course work, examination and thesis.

(i) Analytical Chemistry
(ii) Inorganic Chemistry
(iii) Organic Chemistry
(iv) Physical Chemistry
(v) Theoretical Chemistry
First Year
During the first year of study, the Master of Science candidate will take ELEVEN Chemistry courses, SEVEN of which are compulsory. The remaining FOUR courses will be chosen from the intended area of specialization. However Analytical Chemistry students need to choose two more courses from other areas. Similarly, students who intend to specialize in Theoretical Chemistry must take CHEM 522 - Advanced Quantum Chemistry and one more course from other areas. All the students must audit for MATHS 500 - Biometry and Computer Packages.
Second Year
(i) During the second year of study, a M.Sc. (Chemistry) candidate will carry out an approved Research Project in one of the areas of Specialization, under supervision of an academic staff who would be recommended by the faculty board to the Senate.
(ii) At the end of the research Project, the candidate will be required to submit a thesis, which will be examined according to the common University regulations.
The candidate will be expected to give at least two seminars in his area of research.
Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXIX.
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
Degree Classification
The Master of Science in Animal Physiology degree is classified in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.
